Default Question bout more than one post...

Is anyone on more than one explorer/cadet post? If so, does that work out pretty good? Thanks!

Back when I was an explorer, I was on three Posts. Deputy Chief on one, Captain on another, and in the third we had no rank. It worked out fine, as our meetings were all on different days of the week and only with one would we meet on Saturday's or something like that.

I would recommend against. When I was a junior, I was with one department. I ran calls with one department, and only ONE DEPARTMENT was my home, my department. Where has the allegiance gone?

I knew something was going to come up like this.....I would like only one department to be my home....But I have been on one department for a year which has an explorer post.....Then this other department has a cadet program which I put in my information to be on there over a year ago and they were at a standstill and they just got back to me. I love the idea of only having one department but I have awesome brothers and sisters at both deparments because they are neighboring departments. I just wanted a little bit of input just to see if it worked out for anyone else who has tried it. Thanks!

Being on more than one post at the same time is OK, you get different perspectives, but doesn't bode well for the rest of the members on either post. This is fine with different posts, like police and fire, etc, but talking just fire to fire, you have to be careful.

As it is all depts will do things differently, so being affiliated with two posts, one can get an attitude towards one or the other. They may get the point where they become a "know it all" or make remarks like well this post does it this way or this dept does it that way etc. Also one dept may allow ride outs and another doesn't or the activities and explorer can do differ. In ours we allow ride alongs, but if you catch a fire, you are strictly an observer. You do not touch a tool, you do not handle hose etc. You either stay with the IC or with the rig.

It is possible to be with two posts, but if you will do it, keep your mouth shut about it. When with one post or the other, abide by their rules and give them your attention. Don't downplay one post as being "inferior" because they may not do as much as another. The post is there for people to LEARNabout the job, not to do the job.

So as long as your not a know it all and you don't do this department is better or this department does it this way you should be fine if you are on two different posts?

Pretty much, because if you do that no one would really know you are on two posts. If it is found out, if you are not being a "know it all" then it shouldn't matter. The only time I would caution against it is if there is something in the post's bylaws saying you can't.

Explorers is a part of the Boy Scouts and even there, someone can be affiliated with two troops. Generally it isn't the same time, but one can be a Boy Scout and also on an Explorer post.

I like the points you make. But when I was an explorer, it was actually very nice for me to be on two posts. One was a well established post that had been around for 12 years prior to me joining and was a (IMHO) VERY good post. The other I joined a week after it stated, and everyone liked hearing what suggestions I had, as I was the only person there with experience at other posts. I was never a "know-it-all" but many times an Advisor or an instructor would come and ask, how would you do _________________ type of training? Or, how was the post organized, with officers and things like that.
