Two people were killed and four others injured this morning when an oil well exploded west of Crossville, Ill.

The names of the deceased have not been released. Authorities have identified those injured in the blast as Glenn Iles, 41, Scott Funkhouser, 44, Bradley Cunningham, 52 and Kevin Aldredge, 30. Their hometowns were not available.

The explosion of the well was reported to have occurred about 10 a.m. while an oil field service company was in the process of cementing in a finished well. A spark is believed the likely cause of the explosion and fire.

Ambulances and medical helicopters were reported en route to the remote site shortly before 11 a.m. to evacuate the injured.

Fire departments from several nearby Southern Illinois communities had been called to contain the fire.

Crossville, Ill., is located eight miles west of New Harmony, Ind., at the intersection of Illinois Highways 1 and 14.
