Metro DC Gas Prices Keep Falling Prices down another 18 cents in one week

By Michael Flynn Updated 11:42 PM EST, Sun, Nov 16, 2008

Drivers can keep smiling at the pump these days. The price of gasoline in the metropolitan Washington area keeps falling, following the major drop in the cost of crude oil, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Wolesale prices for gas are so low that in some parts of the country, retail pump prices have dipped to as low as $1.75 a gallon. Here in the DC area, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.16. That's down 18 cents from a week ago.

These prices will give people heading out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday another reason to be thankful. "Falling gas prices will continue to put extra money in motorists' wallets," said John Townsend with AAA Mid-Atlantic. "Filling the tank this Thanksgiving will cost substantially less than last year when gas prices were topping $3 a gallon."

AAA will soon release its travel projections for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Actually, at this end of the World, it has. Dropped to 0.825 per litre last week, and been holding there. It even dropped below a dollar per in Victoria for the first time in almost 3 years!

I wish it would stay constant for more than a day here. It went from .82 or .83 to like .95 and then back down to .82 and then back up. At least I got my SUV filled up before it went to .95. Cheapest yet to fill it up at about $50.

Just filled up the 4Runner yesterday from almost empty at $1.89 per gallon. Cost $40. Haven't seen that in about 3 years.

As a teenager cutting yards for spending money,I bitched mightily over gas going from .699 to .759 a gallon in the 80s.That really cut into my $10.00 a yard fee.And 10 dollars was real money in those days, sonny.
In 2004,I had my Minitor II on the countywide channel and heard one officer call another to announce that he'd seen gas for $1.47 on the Beltline in Paducah,Ky.
Since I lived near the gas station in question,I rode my bike(We don' need no steenkin' gasoline!) over to see for myself and while I watched, people started pouring in to both stations on that corner as the two filling stations engaged in a price war.
This morning, here in Memphis, the cheapest I saw was $1.709 in an inner city station.Last night,I filled an 18 gallon fuel tank for 32.76 at $1.819.

I think I'm gonna cry. My truck is side-lined right now for failing its initial safety inspection (upper/lower ball joints and brakes) otherwise it would be costing about $55.00 to fill it right now. Of course once I get it passed the inspection I have no doubt gas will be back up to over a dollar again.
