In Memphis, there is somebody on "watch" 24/7. The watchmans duties include taking down the flag during inclement weather, securing the house when all apparatus leaves and at night, answering the door, answering the phone, checking the fuel tanks, and making sure the crews get up and out the door at night. Calls come in via overhead vocal and a printout is recieved. The watchman verbally acknowledges the run, and then activates an overhead bell and lights. It is his responsibility to take down the address and call info if the printer is down, as well as making sure the crew gets up and out. (This sometimes requires the watchman to physically enter the dorm and "provoke" the personnel out the door) If the apparatus the watchman is assigned to gets a run, somebody from another piece is assigned as "cover" watchman and must assume the watchmans duties until the watchman returns. The watchman is permited a sleeping watch from 2300-0600, and is then responsible for the 0630 wakeup. The watchman is also responsible for basic tidying of the kitchen / dayroom, making the first pot of coffee, and cleaning the overnight dishes.

Holy moly, is this circa 1932?
    Never heard of a "watchman".
We get a tone and then verbal address of the incident/and or fire.
Obviously, a few members never seem to "notice" the tones.
Thusly, they get their bed kicked.

Wow! An expert on all things fire service, with an answer or every situation has never heard of a "watch man" or someone taking house watch? Maybe you aren't quite as wordly as you believe. Or once again, maybe you aren't a fire fighter at all. It surely wouldn't be the first time you lied now would it?

It has nothing to do with whether people like your opinions or not. People have differing opinions here all the time and handle it like mature adults. It has to do with the completely immature manner in which you express your opinions. On top of the fact that you LIED with your oh so insincere apology.

What grade are you in anyways? I am guessing sophomre or junior in high school.

By the way, since it has become so popular, here it is one more time for you to ponder:

On my dept we get around 9000 calls and we have dispatch that goes out over all 7 stations so you hear it all night long. Tradition why change it?? (Actually the first of the year we are going to selective dispatch) For the problem of sleeping through alarms. You should have the officer's sleep with a portable next to their bed so it will be louder. That is what I do. It isnt good to get shocked awake, but you dont miss alarms either. Until you can get more speakers I would have them do that. Or go to a house watch system.

Since apparently Memphis is stuck in the 1930's per alec, I am curious to know if any other departments still utilize a watchman?

Actually, it would only be a fee pass is i got it WITHOUT serving for 8 years.
Since i did....Its no different than those with College that ALSO get credit.
After serving in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm and then 7 years after that (all as an Air Force Firefighter) i think that qualifies as "earning it").
Besides, The Physical agility part of the exam has no "points" added. Its go or fail. The interviews were a cake after Military boards considering promotions ahead of schedule.
But to respond to your comment.
Any Military service trumps ANY time as a volunteer for gaining a Professional job.
You may not agree with that, but the VAST majority of Cities do.
Especially now. The Veterans Admin. From BOTH Clinton/Bush pushed hard for Veteran benefits that have been EARNED.
    There are no giveaways.
There are a few different ways to get "points" added here in Ohio.
    1. Vet 20%
    2. 4 years degree 18%
    3. 240 card (ff2) 5%
    4. EMT 2% at most (not a given)
    5. Paramedic ALSO gets 20%.
So as you can see. None of those a freebees. They all require "service" or time.
Most vollies have only a ff1 card. (no points)
And, You arent even ASK about your prior work history or experience untill the oral interviews...Without your Medic,Vet status or college....you wont get that far.
So, i suppose if you were a Veteran that volunteered and were a medic, YES, than you'd have a good chance. But it was due to the Vet/ Medic part.

Interesting... around here it doesn't work that way but that is rather eye opening that other places function that way. I actually have a friend who just jumped from a vollie to a career guy and my other friend who just came back from Iraq (Vet with 7 years in) didn't even get to the interviews during the same hiring rotation.

As far as serving is there a provision that dictates what you get for your service? Case in point I have a buddy in the national guard who is a paper pusher... who hasn't really done anything out of the ordinary while another buddy has been to Kosovo, and Iraq (where he lost two guys right in front of him among other things) and has 'earned' more than I am sure he will get.

It doesnt matter if one is a Green Beret or a cook.
If one serves "honorably" for at least 2 consecutive years..They get Veteran stautus.
Even Gaurd members that served at least 2 years active duty (many have during this war) they also get it.
If i were a non Vet. Paramedic is the next best "gatekeeper" status if you will.

I most certainly did graduate high school and golly Mr Big Shot, college too. So what grade are you in again? 10th? 11th? I would imagine about that since you can't spell or put together a proper sentence.

Oh here we go!! The wannabe who isn't even a real firefighter challenging my testing ability. Golly, I am shaking in my boots. I not only passed the test and got hired once, but chose to move to another FD tested and got hired again!! All with no veterans bonus points!!

Um you most certainly LIED. Well except for the part I highlighted in red. That most certainly is true.
