I just landed a job as a paid call firefighter. I am 18 years old and really excited to start working. I have to attend a 3 month academy that I am looking forward to.
If someone has been a paid call firefighter in the past it would be nice to hear what they went through and how they liked being a paid call firefighter. Pros cons, tips, stories. Anything will be really helpful.
All-call department or combo department?

Stop the "paid call stuff"
1. Join Military
2. Get your Medic or Intermediate EMT
3. Get on a full time Professional Dept. ANY one will do. Just make sure the pay is enough for your life style.
In Ohio our pays can range from 48k min. to 65k max. without O.T.
But if you want to do this for a LIVING than the paid call will help you not one bit.
The Military is like a gatekeeper. It opens MANY MANY career doors.
I hope it is NOT a combo dept. All they are is : Part Pro and part scab.

he asked for advice. Tough to give without knowing the specifics.

there is nothing wrong with a combo dept the SMALLEST portion of fire fighters in the USA are paid full time.
this can be a great stepping stone for you, If you desire to be a fulltimer the experience and training you gain NOW can get you there!

Volunteers are just amatuers. They may enjoy it and good for them but they are just enjoying a hobby.
There is ZERO comparison between vollies and Pros.
Not in any area including EXPERIENCE,Training and Knowledge.
There is just NO comparison. I do my own taxes, (ours are easy) Im NOT an accountant though. Not even close. The Accountant is the Tax (Pro).

Also to those that keep refering to career firefighters as the only professionals a word of advice from a career professional that was once a volunteer professional, we are all professionals in the fire service, we may do things different from department to department and state to state but the only difference between fire departments is volunteer, paid on call, career all of who are PROFESSIONALS.
Which part? Where you give handouts to military personal and blackball people with experience in the same profession as you? I'm very familiar with professional fire settings..ironically some of the professional departments here NEED to call on us for Mutual Aid and I assure you we don't see any of the attitude you display on this forum while on the fireground.Quote:
