Wow, the first day of 2009 and we read of a LODD, makes my stomach turn.

My thoughts are with everyone connected, the firefighter and Elizabeth, NJ. as well as the apparatus driver that hit him.

Saw the fire on TV this morning. Frame buildings close together, advanced fire on arrival, bitter cold. The Elizabeth F.D. gets it's share of work and does a good job all around.

No doubt lots of exhaust fog, very slippery conditions as well. My sympathies to the family and colleagues and especially to the driver. He must be going through hell.

Firefighter Killed in Line of Duty in Elizabeth

ELIZABETH, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A veteran firefighter has been killed in Elizabeth.

Mayor J. Christian Bollwage says 57-year-old Gary Stephens suffered extensive head and chest trauma when a fire truck ran over him at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. The 28-year veteran never regained consciousness.

Stephens was directing the fire truck, which was backing up under a bridge supporting the New Jersey Turnpike as it laid down hose for firefighters battling a fire a few blocks away.

He was run down after turning to look at the fire, Bollwage said. The truck was moving at less than 5 mph.

Stephens is the first Elizabeth firefighter or police officer to die in the line of duty since 1980.

Authorities said a suspect is being questioned about the fire.

What a horrible way to start off the new year. Not to mention the fire was started by a squatter to keep warm which is now in jail according to the secret list email.

My thought to FF Stephens family and the fd.

Do you guys think the homeless man should be charged with murder? I understand there are laws put in place for LODDs but should this guy be blamed? And by no means am I saying the driver should be blamed.

Please don't take offense to my question.

My our brother rest in peace.

In my opinion YES he should be charged. I see first off he was tresspassing and if he started a fire to keep warm which I would go out on a limb and say he probably didn't start the fire in a fireplace. If he did I would be surprised. This is a very unfortunate incident, and if the yahoo didn't start a fire in a home where he had been tresspassing in there probably wouldn't have been a fire and we wouldn't be talking about this right now.

    Once again
I am speculating and not monday morning anything, this is a very sad day for the fire service.

My deepest sympathies to the Stephens family and the Elizabeth Fire Department. My heart goes out to the apparatus driver, who was a long-time friend, according to The Secret List.

Rest peacefully in the arms of the angels, Gary.

My prayers go out to the family and the chauffeur. Any word on if the local has a trust fund for the family yet?

BTW, I grew up on the next street over (next to the firehouse). Lots of really old houses with minimal space between them. Balloon construction to boot.
