Question Company trying to start Explorer program

My company is trying to start an Explorers program, but we have no general information. None of our mutual aid companies have them so many are not familiar. Most of what I can gather is that it depends on how the individual departments want to do it. Is there any place that has more clear cut rules or regulations? And does our insurance have a say in what we can do? We are also ran by a Board of Fire Commissioners, so would they also be included in this?

Contact your local BSA office. Insurance is thru them and they can tell you what is within their guidelines.

    Default Explorers

I was on the explorer post in Lincoln, Nebraska for several years, we had monthly training that was the same every year and were alowed to ride-along for no more than two 24-hour shifts per year.

I have seen other programs where explorers are allowed to mobilize for large incidents and assist with outside operations.

The department I am on now uses a cadet program in conjunction with the local highschool. We train all of our cadets to Firefighter I and II, and basic first aid. They are allowed to ride with us on any call and only operate exterior operations at structure fires. At the end of their cadet program they are allowed to apply for membership.

I have a suggestion. What ever you do, keep all members of the department informed of how the program runs, the intent of the program, and what is expected of the explorers as well as the firefighters.

We have explorers, but we have no idea what to do with them when they show up on a shift. Some lack ambition while others will be on your heals all day. Have a handbook made up or some type of daily/monthly goals something to help the on-duty personnel. Right now it is a big pain in the neck to have them around. The LT. running the program didn't even tell these kids to bring money for chow. They show up expecting us to feed them! What a mess.

And yes, we have asked for rules and handouts from the LT. but we get nothing.

Think it through it can be a great program.

Not an explorer program, but a very well run cadet program:
