Life Safety Tax
Does anyone have any experience with getting money from your county's life safety tax funds?
When the tax was purposed, we were told that all the emergency services in the county would be able to use the funds. Now the state’s attorney is telling us that there is a state statute that doesn’t allow us to receive any of the tax.
Just wondering if anyone else was receiving funds from a similar tax.

Sounds like typical Illinois politics to me!!!!!!!!

Just what is the county doing with the money? Seems it would have been put on a ballot and voted on by the county residents somewhere along the line. What was the original intent of the tax? Lots of questions to be asked.

Jack I was wondering the same thing. I seen it on the ballot in the last election and wonder WTF, I'd never heard of it. Just figured it was another way for the county to raise my taxes, I didn't vote for it, and it got turned down in this county. But was it an incress or a new tax?

Now that I think more about it, I remember something about school districts endorsing the county putting some tax on the ballot. Maybe this was what they were talking about. I honestly don't remember if it was on there or if it will be on the next one. Gotta do some more digging.

When it was first proposed, the county officials said that it would be used as a supplemental tax for the sheriff’s office. It got voted down twice. Then they started promoting it as a tax for “all emergency services”. This time it passed with no problems. Of course now that it’s been passed the county has told us that the state statute about one taxing body giving money to another taxing body prohibits them from giving us any of the funds. This tax generates around $300,000 per year so there’s a considerable amount of money to go around.
I just wondered if anybody else had any experience with something like this and how they were handling it.

Wait a minute, red flag!!! Does not make sense, who is collecting the tax, and what does it say on you tax bill? All of our tax funds come from the county clerk, who is also funded by tax dollars. It’s all in the way it’s worded on the bill?

Sorry, this is a 0.5% sales tax not a property tax. It’s charged on any goods sold in the county and then collected by the county. The wording of the tax is for life safety issues which would mainly be any emergency services.
What they are saying is that the county isn’t obligated to provide fire protection so they aren’t allowed to give the fire districts any of the money.

well, by golly, I'd sure be finding out what they plan on doing with $300,000 a year. That's a lot of money.
