First off,my old department's officers said I could use any names anymore when telling war stories but:
There's a couple other threads about this but to be nice:
My old volunteer department would have the Trustees buy a jacket, knife or some other trinket from the Our Designs ( http://www.ourdesigns.com ) catalog to hand out to the troops at the Christmas dinner.
The last year that I was on,we didn't get anything as "we had just gotten a new $1.5 mil station" but we did have a nice dinner and entertainment.
One of the more technically savvy members had gotten pictures of the moving day activites as we shifted from the old station into the new digs.He even recorded Central Dispatch's dropping our tones to inform everyone listening that the new station was open and "...to now respond to the new station on further tone outs...".Even the Assistant Chief laughed when he found out why his helmet sizing band had been altered by a member who wanted to briefly impersonate an officer.
Maybe have tours of the station house since there's probably still one or two relatives that haven't been by to visit.Show off how you live at the station or how the rigs are kept up and equipped.
Right after dinner,we had the awarding of "The Spaghetti Award"(a plaque with a box of spaghetti noodles glued to it) for the year's biggest screw up.It could be for someone leaving a helmet on the dash which can break a windshield when stopping, someone wrecking the Chief's buggy even though the other driver was at fault, not being able to figure out the generator switch on a rescue unit, any inside joke that doesn't hurt someone that can easily be explained to family.
We didn't do games per se but the kids did have room to play tag,try on Dad's,Mom's,Uncle's or Granddaddy's turnout gear while the place was being Canonized,Kodakked,Nikonned, et cetera,et cetera,et cetera.
Hope this helps a little.Last edited by doughesson; 01-29-2009 at 02:21 PM.

"Mexican" grab bag is always fun...everyone brings a wrapped gift (set a monetary amount for a standard) and pick numbers. 1 goes first, then 2, but 2 has the opportunity to take the give that 1 got as an exchange. For each subsequent number they can chose from all the gifts opened before them. Makes it interesting and can start some exchanging wars.
An old favorite yet always forgotten, Musical Chairs! Simple and fun!
