Default Not Quite The Best Way To Spend A Vacation

Not really sure this was a great idea, but it worked out pretty okie dokie in the end.

Firefighter beats blaze while on vacation

Qualicum Beach man helps put out Mexico resort fire

By Danielle Bell, Daily NewsFebruary 5, 2009

The job never stopped for a Qualicum Beach firefighter who fought flames at a resort in Mexico even while on vacation with friends.

Four days into his trip last month, Matthew Ciolfi, 22, was outside when his two friends that were in the resort restaurant noticed sparks and smoke from the roof. Ciolfi followed the trail and saw flames from the kitchen.

The friends were staying at an all-inclusive resort in Rincon de Guayabitos, about 50 kilometres north of Puerto Vallarta.

Ciolfi grabbed a fire extinguisher and blasted it, which did little to douse the blaze.

He then organized a team to round up more extinguishers and make sure tourists and staff evacuated the complex. The men activated fire alarms.

Then the group, armed with more extinguishers, crept around to attack the flames from another side.

"We had our shirts dipped in water around our faces," recalled Ciolfi on Thursday. "It definitely got our heart rate going."

The fire, believed to have been ignited by grease from the deep fryer and grill area of the kitchen, eventually ran out of steam.

Canadian commercial kitchens are regulated with fire suppression systems, said Ciolfi, but that was not the case in Mexico.

The story of Ciolfi's quick action has made the rounds in the small community of Qualicum Beach and even town mayor Teunis Westbroek dropped by the firehall to offer his congratulations. However, modest Ciolfi does not want any fanfare for his efforts.

A firefighter for nearly three years, Ciolfi is on forest firefighter duty in the summer months.

He said the incident won't stop him from vacationing in Mexico again.

I hope the resort at least replaced the shirt!

    Thumbs up Know The Feeling............

Laura and I left our Wedding Reception, heading off for a long Weekend/Short honeymoon. A few miles down the road we encountered a Head on crash that had just happened a minute or two before we arrived. We went right into action, and were there for over an hour before we could continue on.......
That was Thirty Two years ago, and we haven't slowed down yet. I know just how he feels......... Congrats Bro, good job!.

Do Mexican FD's have unions? I wonder if they will go after him for "volunteering" to fight this fire instead of letting the paid guys handle it!!!

But seriously, congrats to a heck of a job!!
