    Default DOT Placards

    Hi Guys,

I haven't been on here in a while and I am hoping somebody can help. I'm looking for a few DOT placards to use in my Firefighter Recruit training in the hazmat practical skills sessions. I've did a guick Google search and find plenty of vendors who sell just what I want, hoever most have a minimum order of 50 each. Anyone out there have a few they would be willing to give up? Or if you know of a supplier that will sell singles that would be great.

Why don't you just put pictures up on the overhead?

Practical skills usually means hands on training.

Grainger sells them in singles less then $3 for most of them.

    Default Skills

This practical skill involves dressing in full PPE/SCBA, approach a simulated vehicle or tank and identify the placard from a distance, return to the IC and report what their findings are and report on intitial action steps and potential hazards listed in the ERG. Currently I've been just printing simulated placards on my printer, however they print smaller (on 8"x11.5" paper) than actual placards and sometimes the colors are off, hence the reason I would like to use actual placards. The smaller the simulated placard the closer the student must get in order to read the information. I was hoping another fire instructor on the forum may have a few to share or information on a vendor who will sell them one or two at a time.

    Thanks,

go to your nearest truck stop, atleast the major chains like pilot, TA, Flying J, Love's will all have single placards that you can buy, not sure what the price is, but I know they are cheap.

It might be worth to see if you can get some of the businesses in your area to donate some of them. Let them know why you need them and if you can get a few places to donate 2 or 3 then you can come up with a decent collection.

This way you might also end up with the placards that are most prominent in your response area.

Don't know if this would be practical for you, just a thought...

Stop by a "big" truck repair garage. They will likely have a hinged version, where you can change the placard/hazard to fit the scenario. The one that I got had a price tag of around $35, but when I told them what I wanted it for, the they reduced the price... by "around $35"!

I'll look for the vendor, but I bought 20 or so different placards for under $35 last summer. We put them down range and had groups of Ops people scope them with their binos and research whatever they could find on each one. We got good feedback vs. just sitting around the classroom looking stuff up.

If you have a trucking company or two nearby, get with them and see if they have any old ones running around. We've been able to get some of the flip-style that way. You might even be able to find a wrecker service that has some off of trailers they've towed or that are in the junk yard.

For future use, I forgot I had this file. It is all the class placards in pdf format. However, I cannot upload it, so if anyone needs it, email me and I will forward it. jason@jbrescue.com
