Question FEMA Grant & Dry Station

I posted a message yesterday. Maybe I posted it incorrectly. (never saw my thread posted)

    Here is my basic question:

Can a department receive a FEMA grant and allow alcohol to be remain at the department.

I went through the rules, but I'm not able to find any information on this.

    Thanks, KJ

What does it matter? Alcohol shouldn't be at a fire station anyways.

I agree, that why I asked.

Some people get fire fighting mixed up with a social club.

I don't recall it being a fema thing but there might be state or local laws about it. Besides the good old days are gone and too many people are sue happy now days espically if someone leaves your station under the influence and causes an accident, your fire department and city can be held liabile.

In short, yes! That said, alchohol in the fire station seems to primarily a "northeast" thing, where the VFD's had, and sometimes continue to have, as significant a social place in the community as they do a public service place. Not saying that it's right, just that it's so. I've taught in many firestations in NY, PA, MA, NJ, & VT that have a "bar". Even one where the upstairs bar has a brass pole into the engine room!

There are no questions on the FEMA AFG application that ask about "dry or wet" fire station.

Lets pretend the OP is trying to use the threat of NO federal money to get the booze out of the firehouse.

Back in the good ole days when men were men and women were were kept barefoot & pregnant at home cooking, the firehouse became the place for drunks to save their bad marriages. Those days are long gone and so should the booze in the firehouse.!!!

Since we are speculating here: If I was reviewing an app for an apparatus and they had an open alcohol policy on the premises would I be giving them a new Engine ???? I think not.

I can see the narrative now.

So when the bell rang ,i jumped from my barstool and slid down the shiny brass pole without spilling my beer, to mount my trusty broken down 1966 hahn and it wouldn't start. please give us a new truck.

There's nothing in AFG about it. There was a push for it but the thing is many VFDs have social halls that are rented out for weddings so they have alcohol serving permits. So since they couldn't split hairs enough they left it out. Since there are plenty of alcohol and drug problems in stations without bars (more than with bars last set of numbers I saw but that's neither here nor there) I'd say the problem is with people not the objects. Beers don't drink themselves.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I agree, alcohol has no place in the fire service.

What's your agenda? Payback to your local FD or individuals on the FD?
