    Default Cairns 1000 vs. 1010

Does anyone use the 1000 at their department? I know they cost quite a bit more than the 1010, but is it worth the extra money for the extra protection? Right now, it would take about 4-6 weeks to get a 1000 delivered to me from thefirestore.com and 1010's are in stock. I know they're virtually the same helmet with the exception of the Kevlar lining on the 1000. Also in regard to the 1010, is the Defender Vision worth purchasing?

By the way, I'm not really interested in a leather helmet because I honestly cannot afford one, so conversation about the N5A and N6A isn't really needed. I also have a large head, so the Cairns 880 isn't really an option either. Finally, I like the 1044, but I'm not a huge fan of the matte finish on it, so virtually all I care about is the 1010 and 1000

Defender visor is one of the best ideas to come around in along time. Great piece of gear. Will not be melted or scratched when you need to use it. Fit much tighter to face that a standard shield of Bourkes. Not qualify as primary eye protection but does a very good job.

If you wear glasses Defender may not clear the frames so you may need to get birthcontrol glasses (sport type).

    Default Defender

Thanks for elaborating on the defender vision a bit. I like it myself, but was unsure if it was considered primary eye protection or not. I am leaning toward the 1000, but the defender vision is one reason I considered the 1010.

The defender is considered primary eye protection. I had a 1044 with defender when they first came out and liked it very much. But for the last year and half I have had a Phenix leather and love that. Before the 1044 I had a 1010 for six years and it was a great helmet. Just stay away from the ben II I had it for less than a year and hated it. Any of the cairns are great helmets. Some guys on my dept have 1000's and they have not had any problems with them. They are hard to get now b/c of the Kevlar and the war as you prob know. And the only real benifit would be is if a wall or something fell on you your helmet would hold up better. Other than that I would stick with the 1010 or 1044.

Yeah, I haven't heard a lot of good remarks about the Ben II. My department issues Paul Conway American Classics which I've had no trouble out of, but my head is rather large and the headband doesn't flex as well as my assistant chief's 1010. It sounds kind of strange that the headband doesn't fit my large head well considering the Paul Conway expands out to 9-1/2, which is about the largest I know of. The 1010 just fits me better and that's the reason I'm going with a Cairns in this purchase.

And the current lead time on a 1000 is about 4-6 weeks according to MSA. I spoke to one of their reps yesterday because I wanted to know how long it would take if I did go with the 1000. I'm sure it would hold up a little better after impact, and that's the main reason I'm debating between the 1010 and 1000. Plus, like I stated earlier, I do like the defender vision.

Now if they come up with a 1000 defender that would be nice. I know St. Louis City use to only issue 1000's but they are issuing 1010's now b/c of the defender visor.

I have worn both and not really seen a difference in the life of the helmets.

Thanks for the reply. The difference in life and durability of the 1010 and 1000 is what I was mainly concerned about. With that being said, they both have to be quality products or they wouldn't have the 1971 certification.
