Default Just received a SAFER DJ

Just received a Dear John on our 2008 SAFER application:

"However we can tell you that your application faired reasonably well in the automated assessment but that in the second phase, the peer review panel's scores indicate that your application was generally good and above average in all elements (i.e., there was some information that was useful), but not sufficiently compelling to be considered for funding on its written merits."

Default got a DJ we cant fund you until we get more money

Here is what i got for a led sign request, advertising costs, and a tv for the day room:

"As a result of reviewing your 2008 grant application, the panelists' scores indicate that your application was generally good and above average in all elements, i.e., the application had merit. Regrettably, after awarding departments with scores higher than the scores assigned to your department's application, we do not have enough funding to
offer you an award at this time. However, your application scored well enough that if we identify any excess funding from unused administrative funds or if some of the applicants who have been offered a grant decline the offer, we may be able to fund your request.
Be advised that if any excess FY 2008 funding does become available, it may not be identified until late in the Federal fiscal year. For example, last year we did not identify excess FY 2007 funding in the Assistance to Firefighters Grants until September 2008. Therefore, if excess funds are identified we may be funding additional FY 2008 requests as late as September 2009."

We have our fingers crossed as more department turn down the money.

Very interesting seeing denials, considering that SAFER budget wasn't fully fulfilled and DHS "sent some money back."

Thumbs down Got my last DJ for 08

3 out of 5 SAFER funded this year. Interesting that "hoserbt" had an offer if funds became available, I wonder if they are going to fund your LED sign.

One of my awards had the LED sign removed. An additional email requesting an explanation for the sign removal stated "that the SAFER program does not fund LED signs and if anyone had them funded it was an oversight of the program specialist".

    Default sign

I put in my narrative that the sign would say DHS ROCKS 24 hours a day. After I read the last post I would expect to have the sign removed and just get the advertising and tv for day room.

    Thanks for the info

I don't know about the LED signs. I got one, and other than an offer for bottled water during a federal disaster, it has NEVER a message that does not directly pertain to recruiting and retention.

I heard that some signs were awarded that were used to announce breakfasts, events, etc, on a continual basis, and that has gotten further awards a second look.

I have been advised by FEMA program reps that LED signs are still OK, with the proper justification and usage.
Perhaps this is something that varies greatly upon wording, or the program specialist?

    Default usage

I stated usage for recruiting new members, amber alerts, fund raising events, appreciation of members, and weather alerts. I think there were a few more.

We will keep our fingers crossed

Honestly, I think the mention of fund raising events will hurt. I of course could be, and very often am, wrong. Just ask my wife.

Talking Not a DJ : But a maybe!!!

Received this from our 08 safer on the 20th. We've been without power since then and just getting back online.
    We applied for R&R.
    Keeping fingers crossed that all the hiring funds being turned down might turn into an award for us.:-}

As a result of reviewing your 2008 grant application, the panelists' scores indicate
that your application was generally good and above average in all elements, i.e., the
application had merit. Regrettably, after awarding departments with scores higher than
the scores assigned to your department's application, we do not have enough funding to
offer you an award at this time. However, your application scored well enough that if we
identify any excess funding from unused administrative funds or if some of the applicants
who have been offered a grant decline the offer, we may be able to fund your request.
Be advised that if any excess FY 2008 funding does become available, it may not be
identified until late in the Federal fiscal year. For example, last year we did not
identify excess FY 2007 funding in the Assistance to Firefighters Grants until September
2008. Therefore, if excess funds are identified we may be funding additional FY 2008
requests as late as September 2009.

Clearly, your application was competitive. But if you wish to improve even further the
competitiveness of future SAFER grant requests, we recommend that you review the portion of your application

Looks like you might have a good shot at it. With folks having to back up on their request and all.

Thats what we are hoping for, as it seems like there are several large $$ hiring grants going to be turned down due to the current budget climate.
    We're keeping our fingers crossed.

This still all makes no sense. Our Regional Rep informed us that there were so few applications that passed the eligibility tests that funds were 'returned' to the FEMA pot.
