    Default 2009 Hose Grant

I am thinking about applying for some new hose this year, is this a priority?? Also I have looked over the NFPA Standards and can not find anything on the service life of fire hose, is there one?? We have our second due engine that still has some of the very old horse **** hose on it and not much of any 1 1/2 inch and no LDH. Also does someone have a narrative for hose that they would not mind sharing. You can email me a movillevfd@netins.net

NFPA 1961 & 1962 discuss service life in the Annex A Explanatory Material. In a nut shell they state; "....fire departments should give careful consideration to a 10-year maximum service life under normal operating conditions".

We are also looking to replace hose. If anyone has an example of a successful narrative I would like to see it. Also, does anyone know if they have set a cap for the cost of hose. With turnout gear they set a cap for each piece. Was wondering if they did the same for the different sizes of hose. Anyway if anyone has anything I would appreciate the help.

I'm in the process of finalizing our narrative for SCBA replacements and LDH hose, upgrading from 4" to 5". I'd appreciate a copy of any narratives out there to compare. I have a number of other successful narratives as well, just let me know what you need when you email me.

    Thanks again!

We had a succesful grant for 5" hose in 2007. We upgraded from 3" supply hose, I would think that upgrading carries more weight than replacement. I attempted to e-mail our narrative to all of you, but it looks like something went wrong with it. I'm now trying to attach it to this post. If THAT doesn't work, PM me and I can forward you a copy.

Chief why 50' sections of LDH? Never seen anyone using other than 100' sections (and a couple shorter make up sections, couplers being very expensive).

I was going to try to compose a list of detailed justifications for 50' vs. 100' sections, but then I figured the easiest answer is, why not? What's the advantage of 100' sections? Cost of the couplings is one, but we got a grant for the project, so what's the difference? I could also see if you were storing your hose on a reel.

One advantage I see is that I'd rather be able to break a line at 50' intervals when needed, rather than having to clear another 75 or 80 feet off the hosebed to make the break. How do you handle it? Do you pull extra hose off until you reach the next coupling, or do you break it short of the engine and make up the difference with a shorter length? Both of these seem like they add another couple of steps to the process.

I could also use some hose narrative help. We are ok on LDH, but need 1-3/4", 2", 2-1/2", & 3" to outfit an Engine and some replacement for another.

I have successfull extrication, washer/extractor, TIC, SCBA, compressor/cascade/fill station, & tanker/tender narratives available to share.
