Hey guys ,
Just wondering if anyone had to write a essay or more for an application they were filling out. What should I say to not sound like a robot but still get my point across ?
Why do you want to be a firefighter for [your department here] ?
In your opinion, what are three important qualities for a firefighter to possess and why ?
Describe a time when you offered a lending hand to someone who was in need of assistance ?
I have my own story for number One and a few ideas for number two but im not really positive for two. Im thinking character, Motivation and im stuck on a few like Honesty, Trust, Honor, Respect and Courage. How do you explain number three if you don't really recall lending a hand for someone in need. I'am im thinking in emergency assistance, could it be another kind of assistance and what kinds.
AND IN BY NO MEANS AM I LOOKING FOR ANYONE TO DO THE WORK FOR ME....JUST LOOKING FOR SOME HELP TO GUIDE ME SO I CAN WRITE MY OWN ESSAY.

Try to keep all your answers away from the emergency services. I would hint on them a bit.. but don't go strictly with it. People want diversity, people who don't CRAVE the department but are still 110% with it. For number three, I would talk about volunteering somewhere.. maybe helping coach a little league team or helping your neighborhood Jaycees or KC's with a picnic/bbq deal. If you've never done any of this then maybe the next person you see on the interstate with a flat tire, you better pull over and assist them so you can write about it.

Yes I have. And I would stay away from the "canned" answers like the key words you listed in your original posting.
For #1, I would use Capt. Bob's format of an Intro, 3 points and a closing.
For me, your #2 and 3 are super easy, but I'm not going to give it away.

The practice of writing an essay has been done up here in Idaho in the past. With the new Fire Chief we have from Northern California the practice has since been stopped. If you are writing one for your exam....just try to be honest and don't use words that are foreign to you. An example would be you trying to impress them with your word power. IT NEVER WORKS!!Respectfully,
