    Default Roy and Johnny

I do not feel that the wearing of their helmets while driving Squad 51 was a good idea.

This was from the 70's. They also rode on the back of the engine.

There is nothing wrong with riding the tailboard if done properly.

The NFPA 1901 committee took a long, hard look at this television series, and some 30 years later, we can no longer wear our helmets while responding.

Come on. If they did it 50 years ago, then we should be able to do it today. Why should the fire service suddenly start worrying about safety?

50 years ago everyone used leaded paint and gasoline. DDT. Asbestos. Bias ply tires. Cars had no seatbelts and ornate steering wheels and dashboards. People dry cleaned clothes in gasoline.

People died in droves. What's your point?

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

Hey congrats Weruj1 on meeting Mr. Mantooth, I hear he is a real decent guy and very friendly to firefighters. Did you guys chat a while?

I heard too that Kevin Tighe was not so friendly to firefighters until the last few years. I guess I don't blame him any, I would not want to be type cast early in my acting career either. Still like the guy though.....

Hey Jason............yes he is very friendly towards all of us. I was luck in that the man who "shadowed" him from the conference was one of my medic school instructors from eons gone by and I was able to chat with Randy for a few mins by myself. This was also not the first time I have met him as I went to the Emergency Convention in Burbank CA in 1998 and that was a good time. He and Kevin are still very close but Kevin has certainly distanced himself from his persona unlike Randy. Another brief once in a lifetime moment from the man who MOST certainly mold me to the public safety professional I am today, a total class act.

correct me if I'm wrong but it must have been policy then to wear protective headgear while operating an emergency vehicle, as whenever you so the police/so/chp on the scene the LEO always had on a motorcycle style helmet as well
