Our department needs to increase our career staff. We are combination with 2 on a shift, and a “floater”. In your experience, will SAFER allow us to increase to 3 on a shift, or must we have 4 to meet their desired guidelines? Currently, the crew waits until volunteers show up to the station and the truck always leaves with 4. Just increasing to 3 on duty should reduce our response times. I just wanted some educated opinions. Thank you.

I'm kind of piggy backing off of achief here, but had a question for a department that was interested in trying to fund a dep chief position through SAFER. Is this doable? I haven't had a whole lot of interaction with SAFER and need to read the PG again, but I'm sure there is a stronger focus being put towards putting troops on the ground so to say. They are a small career dept and not sure how many guys they run on an engine, but I stressed that would be the place to start but was told they really need someone in the front office to help with paperwork and someone on the scene to run IC. Just curious how this would work.

There is only one thing that matters in SAFER folks; will it gain you compliance with NFPA1710 or 1720 at least 80% of the time? If your project won't do that, it will not be funded.Very simple here!Kurt Bradley
