Does anyone know the reasons why new apparatus are pushed in 3 times? I have found why they are pushed, but does anyone know the reason for it being 3 times?

we don't push ours in, so I can't figure out a reason for pushing it in 1 thru an infinite number of times.

Maybe one time years ago the photographer didn't get a good shot so they had to redo it a couple of times, and after that everybody thought that's how you had to do it...
Or maybe part of a new firefighter fitness program?
I don't know, we've never pushed our new apparatus in...for one thing, our apron is so short everybody would have to stand on the highway to do it...kind of dangerous

"I have a dream. It's not a big dream, it's just a little dream. My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

I have been to literally hundreds of parades since I was three years old with my father. Never, not once have I ever seen a new unit pushed in three times. And I have been to plenty of parades close to Macungie.

Like Buff, having been to dozens of housings and/or wetdowns, I have yet to see a rig pushed in three times.

Buff, I'm shocked you haven't seen this. Just about every housing I've been too does this.
Link from another fire magazine (Oooooh, hope I don't get in trouble) that has an article on it.

I found the reason they were pushed in, was because the horses had a hard time backing them in, way back when. I know there must be a reason that the new apparatus are "pushed" in 3 times when dedicated. I just can't find that reason...

Kyle, I'm curious - which departments in your area are you familiar with that have pushed them in three times instead of just once?

As far as I am aware, none. I joined a brand new station and we recieved a brand new engine. When we dedicated our station, we housed our apparatus by pushing it in once. However, I was looking at another forum and someone stated that they are usually pushed in 3 times. In that thread no one knew the reason to why. I got interested, therefore I created this thread.

So from what I read, one poster in some thread somewhere in some forum once said that rigs are usually pushed in three times, but no one else has supported his claim? And no one in this thread has either?
Sounds like whoever that was got some bad info and posted it on the net for us all to ponder. Stick with the "push it in once and be happy" way of doing things.

If it makes anyone feel better, I have never heard of it being "pushed" in at all. We back ours in.

On the east coast, especially in the mid-atlantic states, it is common to have a housing celebration for a new piece, usually consisting of a parade, followed by a formal "housing" ceremony. The Officers of the host company, and sometimes Chief officers of mutual aid companies, are invited to officially "house" the piece by "pushing" it in.....Which is what occurred back in the old days with horse-drawn rigs. Nowadays modern apparatus is too heavy, so the rigs are "pushed" in, while they just happen to have the engines running and the tranny engaged in reverse.

Seems to me we're a little backward here. It isn't that we pushed the new rig in 3 times, we got tired of pushing the old one in and bought a new one we didn't have to push.

when the horse died in the traces from old age it was traditional to uncouple the horse from the traces and push the cart backwards before carrying away the dead horse away.
After that, to get the wagon moving freely you had to roll the wagon three times over the dead horses spirit so that the new horse would pull the cart happily.Psychiatrists state 1 in 4 people has a mental illness.
Look at three of your friends, if they are ok, your it.
