I was hoping I could get some assistance from the SAFER experts in the forum. We are now 0-4 on SAFER. I have read several different winning narratives of recent including 3 in our county. The one key difference I see is our lack of women and minorities in our department makeup. We have zero minorities and had zero women (we have 2 POC women as of a few months ago).
Will this be a major stumbling block in getting a SAFER? There are no minorities or women on our career firefighter eligibility list either. This is something we cant change, its the law.
If someone out there would be willing to read our narrative for last year and see if there is something else we are missing I would greatly appreciate it.
If we apply this year will the addition of the two women greatly increase our chances?
How is minority status exactly determined. For example if we have someone that is 1/8th pacific islander does that qualify?
To me it appears we have checked every box we can check for SAFER....
Financial need
Financial sustainability
NFPA 1720
A staffing analysis
non volunteer discrimination
training standards
NFPA 1582
critical infrastructure
impact on firefighter safety
hiring is done in accordance with the law
equal opportunity employer
participate in job fairs geared toward minorities and women
OSHA 2 in 2 out
NIMS compliance
MABAS participation
what else do they want????
I can email our narrative to anyone willing to help.
Many thanks.

You can send it to me, but certainly let us know what your denial letters have said.

Brother
I don't believe that if you list that your trying to diversify your department that it will help. I believe if you can show the reason why you are wanting to increase the size of your department and the actual need for more firefighters then your getting some where. If you will send me your narrative I would be more than happy to look over it.
Send it to Medicc315@hotmail.com

minority status
I don't think it would give you any extra points as it is probably assumed you would use fair hiring practices. Hiring just minority or giving them preference my not be be fair to non minority.
Just a thought

same for women
apply same concept above to women, hire the most qualified I would say no matter who they are.
