    Default Crosby vs. Nars Hook

Currently evaluating escape systems and was looking for some thoughts or comments on what type of anchor hook to use, the Crosby or the NARS.

There is something to be said for weight of our tools in the fire service. Guys that keep trying to get lighter tools are missing the boat on some things. A lighter halligan offers less force, a lighter axe, etc. The Crosby hook is steel, the tip is case hardened. The NARS is aluminum. The extra weight of the crosby hook could make the difference if you choose to use it to breach a wall to wrap a stud. I have never used or seen a NARS hook, I have used the crosby and have never had any issue with it no matter what we have done to it.

JB - Thanks for the info.. I myself have used the Crosby and not the NARS. A few people I know have the NARS and at least one has used both and preferred the NARS. They said it worked well using the hook itself to punch into sheet rock. As far as the weight I think they are relatively close - NARS = 10.8oz and the Crosby .79 lbs, but I am going to double check.

I've used and currently own the Crosby, FESH, and NARS hook. I prefer the NARS hook by far because of the bigger throat and because of the hole in the hook which allows some quicker and more versatile anchoring solutions.

    THTMAN,

Check out http://www.rescue2training.com/custom.html?id=4146 to see the NARS in action with a CMC system.

DC - Thanks for the info.. I actually have seen that video before and have seen the hook, but could not use it because it was not on a "training system". I am currently making plans to do some training with the NARS hook. Once again thanks & stay safe!
