Default Do you guys think 18 is too old to join JR firefighting?

i know it says between ages 14-21 but i see that a lot of people join right when they are 14. i would of joined at 14 but i didnt because i been playing football all my life and still am and i cant quit because i love the game. i am currently 17 but when my senior year of football is over i will be 18 by then. as soon as i join i will have 6 months of school left which means 6 months of the JR program...do you guys think that's enough before i get into the fire academy?(that's what my local firefighters been telling me to do after i graduate)

being 20 and being a JR ff? that seems strange to me. I guess its just because of where i live and the rules that my department has. Although once you are legally an adult here in Maine you are open to doing any type of FF that you are certified for. I guess 21 would be a good age though because it prolongs training and makes sure that when you do become a regular ff you are ready to do your job.

To answer the question, No i do not think 18 is too old to join. On my volunteer department the chiefs father who is in his 60's joined to be a driver and pump operator on scene. He drives one of the trucks over and operates the pumps and thats about it. Its good because it frees up spaces for the regular interior guys to be able to fight fires or extract victims at scenes and does not tie them up. Its silly to be understaffed when you could have someone else who does not wish to be and interior firefighter and is willing to do the job.

It sounds a little old, but maybe that kid is a late bloomer. I wouldn't rule him out.

21 years old and still a junior??? Damn. Pretty well every dept where I joined you get on as a full member at 19.

Being 18 and a Jr. FF isn't bad at all. It all depends on when the Department considers you as a firefighter rather than a Jr. It varies where you go, like where I live we have 19 and 20 year old explorers because the Departments hiring age is 21. Being a Jr. before entering the academy will help you out so for it. Good luck.

Exactly. Your age isn't important. What matters is if you have the time to commit. With athletics and then going way to college, will you even be able to participate?

Go to college and get a degree and then try to join a career department if that is what you want to do. Plenty of time to choose firefighting once you get an education first.
