    Default PASS Alarms

I just have to vent. I'm sitting here at work, and one of my co-workers phone rings. His ringtone is a PASS alarm. That might have been what set me over the edge today, because I turned around and gave him a lecture on how doing things like making a PASS alarm your ringtone does nothing but contribute to the complacency of people ignoring PASS alarms on the fire scene.

I dunno if it's just me, but I hate PASS alarms. I've had to work hard to NOT ignore PASS alarms like others around me. I make sure all the new guys are very familiar with deactivating the PASS device when the take off their SCBA. I also feel that using the alarm as a ringtone is just in poor taste, as it is used to make others aware of someone in distress.

Just want to know if anyone else feels the same.

Which probably 8 milliseconds after your "lecture" started, his ears stopped listening to you and his mind was established to show you up and do exactly the opposite of what you wanted.

Bad taste? Sure. Normal? Not likely. Did your reaction help? Even less.

Amateurs practice until they get it right; professionals practice until they cannot get it wrong. Which one are you?

'The fire went out and nobody got hurt' is a poor excuse for a fireground critique.

    In bad taste....yes.

But I can't really see how a ringtone equates to complacency on the fireground regarding PASS alarms.

If it does, your department has much larger problems to tackle.

We had a similar incident in my house.

A probationary firefighter had set his cell phone to use bagpipes as his ringtone. Yes, he trivialised the melody played for the death of one of our brothers to make his phone look cool.

Luckily, our assistant chief was within earshot, and reminded him how distasteful and unprofessional it was in a few choice words.

IF a guys cell phone ring is truly an issue worth venting about....you are living a charmed life.

Was the "bad taste" due to the song chosen, or having the pipes themselves as the ring tone?

During a large area search drill with the recruits the last week at the Fire Academy, one of the instructors who has the PASS alam as his ringtone on his cell phone had another instructor call him to see how the students who were waiting their turn to perform the drill reacted.

All of them checked to make sure it wasn't their PASS alarm going off!

Picone.. it isn't rocket science to teach someone to move around when you hear the PASS' pre-alert or push the reset button. It's funny how those who feel that doing a SCBA refamilairization drill think you are insulting their intelligence, yet they can't figure out how to stop their PASS from going off...

which song did he choose? Maybe he just really likes the way Amazing Grace sounds on the bagpipes and it has a religious connection to him.

one guy's ringtone sounded like the back up alarm on the firetruck. I reprimanded him and gave him papers on it. This kind of lax attitude towards apparatus moving in reverse is what gets people run over. Someone will hear that back up alarm, think its FF so and so's cell phone and not realize the truck is backing up towards them until they find themselves under the duals.

We had some guys record the siren from out Engine - Electric, Q, Airhorn - Everything.

Now whenever someone calls them, it sounds like an Engine is driving.

The guys got suspended for 3 months without pay, we just could not justify the risk that the public would become desensitized to our siren and not pull over anymore.

3 months without pay over a ringtone??!!!

    WTF!!!!

Please tell me you are kidding.

Would you also suspend members who have children with toy fire trucks that sound like real sirens??

    Total insanity!!!

Sirens have been around for quite some time. If you think the public is going to become MORE desensitized to them over a ringtone than you have honestly lost your mind.

How exactly does "suspending them without pay" equate to less desensitization?

I see no problem with any of the tones told about here yet.

Man I can see how it might be annoying but you have to use a little bit of restraint if you are gonna get along with everyone for 24hrs at a time.

The only thing he got from your lecture was he now thinks your a dick. No lesson learned. Most of the time you really can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

If you work with people stupid enough to think a cell phone is a PASS alarm you should really evaluate where you work. I don't think there is a mariachi band in the kitchen when one of the guy's from the Engine gets a phone call.
