Rollover causes delays for evening commuters in Utah County

PROVO -- A high-speed chase that ended with the fleeing driver's vehicle on its top is caused heavy delays on southbound Interstate 15 in Utah County Thursday afternoon.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper apparently used a pit maneuver on the vehicle, which sent it rolling onto its top in the southbound lanes of the freeway just south of the S-curves in Provo.

Troopers say the man inside had been driving very erratically as he was heading south from the Point of the Mountain. In fact, they received numerous calls from other drivers saying the SUV was swerving in and out of lanes and cutting cars off.

At some point, one of the Utah Department of Transportation's incident management trucks was able to get behind the vehicle and slow traffic so that troopers would have a clear road to work with the vehicle.

Troopers tried several times to get the driver to pull over. He wouldn't, and that is when they performed the pit maneuver.

The driver was arrested, though he did sustain some minor injuries. Police believe he was under the influence of drugs, likely heroin.

The incident caused serious traffic delays for evening commuters. The Utah Department of Transportation reported delays of up to an hour in the southbound lanes.

The accident has now been cleared and traffic is moving smoothly.
