Firefighters in Wisconsin are mourning the loss of their former deputy chief.

John Weber, 77, was a longtime member of Township Fire Department in Eau Claire died in the firehouse on Saturday, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

When the company was dispatched for a brush fire Saturday night, Weber went to the station to assist with vehicles. Fellow personnel found him dead when they retuned from the call, reports indicated.

Weber started volunteering in his community in 1964. He served as deputy chief for 17 years. He retired from that position in 1991, but remained active. In 1986, he was named Firefighter of the Year.

Not my department but my immediate neighbors. I would see Jack on most big fires they would call us in on mutual aid. He was a great man, loved by everyone.

Went to his funeral today.

I was asked, and felt honored to do his final alarm on the radio:

"It is with great sadness that we tone out the final alarm for John "Jack" Weber, Retired Battalion Chief of the Township Fire Department Station #5, Town of Brunswick. The incredible dedication and years of service will not be soon forgotten.

GOD SPEED, Jack....and may you rest in peace now."
