Boulder tumbles down hillside into Provo home
Published: Saturday, April 11, 2009
PROVO — A large boulder tumbled down a Provo hillside Saturday and bounced through the second-story wall of a house before crashing through the floor into a garage.
Provo Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Craft said the four-story home near 1500 North and 1500 East is for sale and was empty.
Neighbor Dave Nagel was in his yard when he heard a rumbling sound and said he looked up to see the rock bounding down the hillside. He said the jagged boulder was 8-to-10-feet wide. The property was being remodeled, Nagel said, and new siding and windows were just installed on the back of house — right where the boulder smashed through.
"That puts a lot of people at risk," Craft said. "We're really lucky it stopped where it did."
City building officials were called to inspect the property, he said.
The large rock was likely dislodged naturally, Craft added. It fell with several other rocks and debris, which damaged a playhouse and other structures in the neighborhood.
Five years ago, another house in the neighborhood was hit by a flying boulder. Owners of that home decided to build around the stone, Craft said.
Police do not plan to investigate a group of paintball players seen in the area.

"Mother Nature had something to do with it," Craft said. "It's hard to investigate her."
