    Default EMT-B Certification

Couldn't find anything in the search function relating, I appolize if this was addressed before and I am missing it...

For those of you that are EMT certified, did your department put you through the training as a Volunteer or did you get certified on your own? I have yet to find out from the department I got accepted to and was wondering what the majority of cases are.

    Thanks in advance.

Our department is only licensed at the 1st responder level, so we only pay for that training. It seems that most of the departments around here will pay for classes to get you up to the level of the department, not more at this time.

What I did was joined the neighboring towns volunteer ambulance service and they footed the bill for my EMT-B.

My department will only pay for EMT training after one year of service. However you may take the training on your own before your one year mark, and then the department will reimburse you after you hit the one year time frame.

My FD provides first responder training every other year in-house. Those who want EMT training must foot the bill, but are then reimbursed for the class after they pass and receive their certification.

We are very fortunate here in Maryland. ALL of our training is provided free of charge by MFRI. That includes EMT, FF1, FF2, Hazmat Ops or Tech, Rescue Tech etc. Members of any volunteer department can go as far as they want, through Fire Officer IV and several levels of instructor.

Member of a volunteer ALS department can sometime get their paramedic paid for. I know they can in our county. I believe that this requires a commitment to the department for a given amount of time in exchange for this training.

I had to pay for mine. My chief said I was so dumb I'd never pass. He said, "He didn't want a failure on his department." He actually made me quit because I wanted to go to EMT school. I passed with the highest grade in my class.

On my old department I paid for my EMT class. The department I am currently with reimburses the member for the class upon completion and certification. They will also pay for NREMT certification as we send our FF/EMTs out on federal wildland fires if requested.

I had to pay for the class. We have to do 20 - 12 hour shifts as a tech on BLS transports before we get reimbursed.

My department pays for all volunteer training, fire and EMS.

In addition, if the training is out of town, we provide a vehicle.

If it's overnight, we pay for rooms and give them $35 a day for meals.

We are sending 3 of our volunteer members to LSU in a couple of weeks for industrial fire school. Cost w/ room and meals is about $1400 per man plus fuel for the truck for a 3-day class.

We pay for the class and the exam, the first time.

If you fail either the class or the exam, we won't pay for you to take it again.

I dunno, my paid service took care of mine. I had to cover the national registry fee, however. I'm pretty sure that my volunteer department also takes care of people's expenses.

our district is certified first responder, so they thought they were only going to pay for that even though we had 2 people take and finish the EMT class expecting the dept to pay for it.

At first they balked but then it was brought to light they had payed in the past for previous board members kids. After that they opted to continue to pay for EMT classes.

My service paid for my class, along with most of the other members that have gotten their EMT certifications while with the department.
