I wanted to see what would be better when it comes towards being employed and being hired. I know being a volunteer and reserve are great ways to get your feet wet. However, when it comes to applying at a paid department; what would be better? Working as a volunteer or being a reserve? Would anyone like to enlighten me?

Reserve. Departments tend to look kindly down on those who are already a member of thier department.
There is also a lot of drama and jealous in the volunteer world. People tend to get ****y when you start applying.FF/Paramedic
