    Default "Other" Vehicle definition

(for "Department Characteristics (Part II)", not "Request Details")

Is a fire boat a "vehicle"?
    What about a Sea-Doo?
    Is an ATV a "vehicle"?
Are trailers? (like a CBRNE decon trailer?)

Last year I just took someone else's word for how many "other" vehicles we have. This year, I know enough to ask too many questions.

    Thanks for any help!

You know I'm having trouble remembering where I saw the designations, but am almost positive that ATV and PWC (Personal Water Craft, Seadoo) are listed as 'other' vehicles. I can't believe I can't remember. Has to be the blur of narratives and applications crowding the brain function.

I think I heard somewhere that an atv is not considered a vehicle as AFG doesn't allow you to apply for under the vehicle aquisitions program. If they don't call it a vehicle then I wouldn't either.

    Just a thought

This year they do call it a vehicle. You won't get one, but they're back to calling it one.

I'm liking the "if you can apply for it (even if you won't get it), it's a 'vehicle'" argument. Even better, I think it'll convince the three people who have three different opinions about how many "other" vehicles we have.

    Thanks very much!

Ok, maybe this is not NEW news to anyone, but it was to me today. I noticed that when you request a vehicle, in the section under Vehicle Inventory, at the heading it states DO NOT list any vehicles described as "Other." So I didn't like them, but then it told me that because of the amount of vehicles entered under the Department Characteristics II that the numbers didn't match, so I called the help desk. I finally got transferred to a Fire Program Specialist and he told me that any vehicle such as a chief car, ambulance, or anything that would fall into the "OTHER" category, should NOT be listed. He also went on to say that these vehicles should not be considered when calculating the average age of your fleet. He said there was no distinct advantage to listing these vehicles as we would not be requesting to replace them, so they should not be listed in the application. I shortly after that asked again for his name and took down all of his information and saved it to a file for future reference, but for now, this is what I will be doing. Again, maybe everyone already knew this and I'm behind the ball, but I was shocked when I heard it.

Wink The answer changes day by day...

I went through a very similar course of events, two weeks ago, and after a while I got transfered to a supervisor, and was told that a Utility Pickup Truck was an "Other" and should be listed in both places, despite what the instructions say, and to list the pump size as "0" and tank size as "0" ....

The only thing that seems to be consistent is that he said that they really only consider the age of apparatus that are of the same type you are requesting.

Go figure.... Hope I didn't do something that will anger the computer scoring Gods (like back a few years ago when I entered the year the apparatus was made, rather than it's age in years... geeeezz.)

Good luck! .... unless of course if you are my competition ;-)

Andy you wouldn't believe the amount of people that are still using the year the vehicle was made instead of the age in that category. There have been tons that I have talked to that had to go back and fix it.

hmm did everyone else catch the question on the request page for a vehicle request about how long you have owned the vehicle and they asked for the number of months. I thought that was a strange question and might confuse people who may have put years instead of months.

i ran into the same problem with the "other" for vehicles. I called my regional AFG contact and was told not to put anything in the "other" as it did not have any affect on fleet age, and that they do not fund vehicles listed in the "other" catagory.

Wow.. I just had a mild stroke... I thought I screwed the pooch again... but I didn't (I think) because the only place they specify months is in the time you've owned the a vehicle that you are replacing.. and in our case it a tanker/tender that we've never owned, but need... phew...

Yup, caught the months. This is for the departments out there who was going out and purchasing an older vehicle for next to nothing just to bring down their average age and then have AFG replace it.

The 'Others' they don't want listed are responder cars/trucks like Chief-mobiles. ATVs, boats, and that stuff they don't want either.

ok thanks and how do you figure number of seated positions for an ambulance. Do you go by just front two seats of number of positble seat belts in back as well.

Usually call it 4, but they don't count ambulances anyway.
