    Default Communications Funding

    Hello Everyone!

Looking to tap into some collective knowledge.

I am trying to find some non-AFG funding for mobile and portable radios. Our county is switching over to Colorado's state wide communications network and that requires my department to buy some absurdly expensive radios.

Our county OEM has found funding to partially equip us. This will give us just enough equipment to allow us to straddle between our new and old system. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

Anyway, we are a small, rural, mostly volunteer combo department. We answer about 300 calls yearly and cover about 324 square miles.

If anyone can help me out with some information please let me know!

    Lump532,

Have you tried contacting CCNC ( Consolidated Communications Network of Colorado)? Since they control the 800 mhz radios, they might have a suggestion for funding. Check out thier website at www.ccncinc.org.
We are just getting our 800 mhz radios now and yes, they are expensive!

You might try USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Loan Program. The Obama porkulous bill dumped something like $1.2Billion into it. They are operating the same as for many years except actually have a large pool of cash for lots of project.

Grants are based on household income in your community (by 2000 census). Depending on income can get 10-90%. Typical for rural community seems to be in in the 35% range. They put most of their $ towards low interest loans which you can tap after get grant $. Now run 3-5%. I previous project I did found getting an "essential community service" loan a the local bank was a better rate and without endless piles of paperwork (and annual reporting).

Just about any vehicle/equipment project a FD/Med would have could qualify. Google for USDA Rural Development office that covers your area.

I would also check to see if you qualify for the Buffer Zone Protection Program (BZPP). Just in case you have a pre-qualified tier 1 or tier 2 critical infrastructure in your zipcode or near to it. No cash match and 36 months to complete your communications project.

I'm curious to why you wouldn't consider AFG?

    Thanks for the help.

As far as AFG its not my call. Chief decided to apply for something else. I will be recommending it for next year.
