Default SAFER ideas for small volunteer dept.

I am the chief of a small volunteer department. We are looking for some good ideas for SAFER grant applications. We can not afford to work towards the paid firefighter. We are in need of recruiting new members. Any general ideas will be appreciated so I can start working on our application.

    Thanks,
    Scott

Fuel cards...everyone needs it. (Top ??% get them...entices more folks to come out. Make them like $40-$50 each)

College tuition reimbursement for current students. (We have $1000.00 per semester for each student)

    Start a LOSAP program

Market yourself...website, newspapers, new sign out front (So long as it's not big $$), make a short recruitment video and see if local business' will host it for you, etc... Marketing is #1 IMO. If no one know's you are there, they can't volunteer.

Gift cards (Wal-Mart, Target, BK, anything really) for those that go above and beyond doing things (not just firefighting), but tasks around the station, most calls for the month, takes initiative.

These are just a few. There are many more on here. Just search around and you'll be amazed.
A Fire Chief has ONLY 1 JOB and that's to take care of his fireman. EVERYTHING else falls under this.

Interesting ideas. We've always been so engrossed in the AFG/FP&S grants that we somehow always skipped over SAFER because we didn't think it was something that we could benefit from being a small volunteer department. Anyone have any narratives for ideas listed here so I can get an idea how to structure this? Would be greatly appreciated. As always, if there are any narratives you are in need of in return let me know and I'll check my files.

We are looking towards a quarterly incentive program. Red Sox tickets, a day at the spa, Home Depot gift certificates. Also the guys decided that they would like duty uniforms. Something for them to wear at fire department functions. I can't think of how many items of clothing I have ruined on drill night doing maintenance.

i was talking about this with a guy from one of our neighboring depts. he jokingly said they give away free gas for showing up to calls. he followed that up with saying it would be great to get a grant for something like this. if anyone could send me some info on how to get gas cards from safer it would be appriciated.

We are in the same boat. I like several of the ideas and I attempted a Safer Grant a few years ago and was DJ. So if someone could send a sample I would be for ever thankful.
