    Default Pump Operations

    I know there is probably a thread on here somewhere, but its late and I'm tired after the Wings game......

    What texts or websites would you recommend to get a good basic knowledge of pump operations. Basic firefighting textbooks aren't the greatest.

    Two of my favorites are;
    -The IFSTA Pump Operators Manual
    -The MFRI (Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute) Pump Operations I class text.
    "Loyalty Above all Else. Except Honor."

    One of the more experienced, professional acting, technically sharp pump operators on your own department are always a good resopurce.

    But I also agree that the IFSTA pump operators manual is a good one.

    I have already had one of our best pump operators been helping me with the ins and outs of pumps but was looking for some kind of manual.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    Don't forget to get out the pump manufacturer's manual for your pump. If you know how the pump works and how it's designed, you're going to be able to troubleshoot problems easier. You'll probably also find that the manual has better drawings than the IFSTA or other manuals, so you'll get a better idea of how pumps are designed through them.

    For me the best hydraulics books is Fire Stream Management Handbook by David P. Fornell .... it does cost an arm and a leg though if you can find it.

    Otherwise find the station copy and read it well. Pennwell says out of print and no one is selling it anywhere. It was a good book from hydrant to pump to tip.

    Default Pump Ops Books

    We wrote our own, and it's fabulous. It is geared toward our apparatus, equipment and SOP, but I will send anyone a copy who wants one. It would be a great start to writing one for your own department. And if your department is large enough to have a formal rank structure with engineers (or similar named rank) I recommend having your own manual.

    E-mail me direct at am401@comcast.net if you would like one, and I will send you the PDF file.
