    Default Firefighter 56

Could someone explain what a Firefighter 56 is? There are 2 positions open on Firerecruit for a firefighter 56, one in Jacksonville and one for Polk county. The description on the firerecruit site sounds like they are hiring non certified personnel and putting them through the minimum standards course, but if you go to the actual cities site it says you have to have minimum standards to apply. Any help would be appreciated.

Those should be positions based on a 56 hour work week.

The 56 hour work week almost always means 24/48 shift pattern.

Correct. The Polk County job was for 24/48, no Kelly Day.

Is the polk county FF is gone,I didn't see it on the list, how does a EMT trainee make more than a EMT 56 and have 8-5 hours?

Does polk require that you be a resident of the county to apply?

a trainee would be a new person. new people go to orientation which is 8-5. if you look at the salary schedule, the trainee makes $19,094 per year (obviously they aren't trainee status for very long...maybe a few weeks at most I would guess) and the 56 hour EMT makes $30,134 per year because they work 16 more hours (on average) than a 40 hour week employee.

In Polk, a Firefighter-Trainee and an EMT-Trainee are part of the Proactive Diversity Recruitment and Training Program. Fire has 4 positions and EMS has 4. This special program allows us to hire persons without certifications and pay them while they obtain the training. There are several restrictions and residency in Polk is only one of them. For fire, we usually interview in late Nov. / early December and they start the first of the year. They usually go to the fire academy in the August session and graduate in late November, so the process takes about a year. I think EMS's program is similar.

The FF56 jobs closed last week and we finished interviewing today. We may post for part-time firefighters in the near future and expect to run a Driver Engineer promotional process in August, so there may be a handfull of openings later this year.

The diversity program does not hire those with FF certs. Of course, we have openings for those with FF/EMT, but you compete with many others. The last posting for six positions generated 155 applicants.

It was said last year that JFRD was going to put on 90 this year and they are on track to do so with 2 classes through and a 3rd picked for sept. They say they want to do 60 more next year.

Would you know if they will accept you if your going to EMT school during the hiring process? I finish Fire in Oct and than start EMT in January.
