FDNY test every 4-5 years. The last test was in Jan of 07. I was told that around 30,000 people took it that day. The upper age limit is 29.

you dont have to live in NY to test. you have to live in one of the five boroughs or surrounding counties (nassau, suffolk, westchester, rockland, some others maybe?) on your date of appointment. but to take the test there is no residency requirement (but an additional 5pts given to those who do live in the above mentioned).

Just to clarify what HopefulFF said, you only get the 5 points if you live in one of the five boroughs

Yes you only get the 5 points if you live in the burroughs. You also get 5 points if you are a veteran.

They tested in Jan of 2007. So that means its gonna be about another 2-3 years. Just an FYI over 20,000 people took the test last time. So the 5 extra points really come in handy when that many people test.

I read in the FDNY 2009-2010 "strategic plan" they would start the recruitment process in 2010 for a test in 2011. They also are aiming to have over 30,000 people take the next test. This is all obviously tentative information as things could change quickly. For now though it looks like that is their plan.

Just to put things into perspective for you if you're serious about getting on the job in NYC. I took the last test and scored a 93 with no veteran's points or residency points. My list number is 9155. Generally speaking to have a shot at getting the job, you'd want to be ranked in the top 2000-3000, but the economy and retirements factor in to that as well.
