Draper 3 Alarm Fire
3-alarm fire rips through Draper home
By Pat Reavy
DRAPER — A car that caught fire inside a garage for an unknown reason sparked a three-alarm house fire here Wednesday.
The fire caused more than $600,000 in damage, but seven people, including children, and a number of dogs were able to escape without serious injury.
Smoke detectors awoke the family about 4:25 a.m. inside their house, near 1100 East and 13700 South. Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith said all seven people, including a toddler, were able to escape safely.
Both firefighters and neighbors credited the smoke detectors with possibly saving the family's life. April Feller, who lives across the street, said one of the daughters who lived in a room directly above the garage could feel the heat from the fire on her bare feet as she ran across the floor to escape.
The first arriving firefighters found heavy fire in the garage and spreading to the roof, Smith said.
"There's quite extensive damage," he said.
The main floor of the house and the basement suffered water and smoke damage but no fire damage, according to Feller. Other areas of the house, however, suffered extensive fire damage.
The family, described by neighbors as being animal lovers, also had at least seven dogs and several more puppies at the residence, Smith said. All of the canines escaped serious injury. One dog was in the house the entire time and was carried out by firefighters after the flames were extinguished, Feller said. The dog had apparently found a safe area of the house.
