    Question Volunteering?

Hello I have a question I want to throw out there for all in the volunteer fire depts?

I really want to volunteer. To be a part of a brotherhood to help people, properties and give back to the community plan and simple but theirs one little thing. I'm going to be moving up to B.C. Canada probably next year and I was wondering if that's going to look bad to volunteer and then leave a little after a year as a volly?

Any info, suggestions, ideas would be great.

    Thanks alot, Kyle

Please put your time and effort into another community activity. Try the boyscouts or lions club. At one year you'll be barely trained and they will have wasted time and money on you, both being real shor these days.

I'd recommend talking to the department's chief. A lot of departments don't want to bother with a guy that's only going to be around for a year or less. However, there are those that are hurting enough for manpower they'll take a guy that can serve a role, even for just a few months.

Hey, this question looks familiar. Where in BC are you moving?? You could always join up there. I doubt many dept's will want someone who is going to be around for almost a year.
If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

Talk with the Chief. It all depends on how they are funded for training and how much money they have to lay out in order to get you going. We have a lot of military around here, so those people come in and volunteer knowing that they may get stationed somewhere else in 2 years. Fortunatly, training is paid for by the state and provided by MFRI, so it doesn't cost us anything to take these people on. They can contribute for the time that they are here.

Bottom line, be upfront with the Chief and the department.

Yeah we're one who wouldn't be interested in a years active membership. It still would be better than one who intends to stay twenty and attend meetings only once a year. Those are more common than you might think.

I decided to sign up and do two+ years with my new fire dept. I'm so stoked! This is all so new and exciting and I can't wait to start this and give them and myself 110% the whole time!
