Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

My dream and I hope you don't find this too crazy is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."

Robert, are you testing our eyes with that chart?

When I was working I got a check every other Friday and it was pretty nice looking. Now I get one once a month which is OK. Its never has been enough.

Our recruits begin around 40 grand just walking into the academy! They get a 2-1/2% step when they graduate, if they do. Some do and some don't.

Being a "Pay Per Call" dept. its hard to say how much we make a year, but the hourly wages are $9 for Firefighter. Im not sure if the captains or lieutenants make more. I know the chief and assistant chiefs do but im not sure how much.

    Contra Costa County Fire District
All Line personnel pay at least 21% of the salaries listed into their retirement contribution, it's not optional.

    FIREFIGHTER-PARAMEDIC RECRUIT 6,166.32 - 6,166.32
    FIREFIGHTER-PARAMEDIC/56 HOUR 6,862.26 - 8,341.12

    FIREFIGHTER-RECRUIT 3,829.93 - 3,829.93 1
    FIREFIGHTER/56 HOUR 6,240.02 - 7,584.78

    FIRE ENGINEER/56 HOUR 6,875.86 - 8,357.65 +10% Paramedic Differential

    FIRE CAPTAIN-56 HOUR 7,751.01 9,421.40 +10% Paramedic Differential

    BATTALION CHIEF-56 HOUR 10,794.91 11,901.38

    ASST FIRE CHIEF 11,004.79 - 13,376.39

    FIRE CHIEF-CONTRA COSTA 13,401.51 - 16,289.62

Average Home Price in 2008 was 750,000 (off of http://rereport.com/ccc/annual/index.html). Obviously that is down a bit from previous years but I can tell you right now there are many many homes out there for much less than that. Not everyone lives in the county either, we have no policy regarding proximity of residence.

That's the federal pay chart. Once opened, click on Shift FF's at the bottom. Most are 7's.

Was there last year, but other obligations kept me away this year. We sent a couple of guys, though... If you spent any time in the hospitality suite, you were bound to have met them.
