Manufacturer: PIERCE MANUFACTURING Mfrís Report Date: JUN 04, 2009
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V203000 N/A NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Potential Number of Units Affected: 176
Summary: PIERCE IS RECALLING 176 MODEL YEAR 2008 AND 2009 CUSTOM FIRE TRUCKS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 2008 AND MAY 31, 2009, EQUIPPED WITH MERITOR WABCO STEERING ANGLE SENSORS (SAS). INTERNAL FRICTION CAN DEVELOP BETWEEN THE SENSOR GEARS AND THE SENSOR HOUSING AS A RESULT OF EXTERNAL FORCES EXPERIENCED ON THE VEHICLE INCLUDING VIBRATION. IF DEVELOPED FRICTION IS GREAT ENOUGH, THE DRIVING TAB OF THE SAS CAN SHEAR AS THE DRIVER TURNS THE STEERING WHEEL.
Consequence: WITH A BROKEN SAS DRIVING TAB, THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY, WHICH COULD POSSIBLY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy: PIERCE WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND THE VEHICLES WILL BE REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JUNE 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PIERCE AT 1-920-832-3000.
Notes: OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATIONíS VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .
This isn't only for the Kool Aid guys, but all those that have the Meritor Wabco ESC systems installed.

Again, a look at the NHTSA web site is worthwhile. It's worth reading and understanding. One thing becomes pretty clear: While it's a defect that needs to be corrected, there is no need for panic.
There is earlier correspondence from Meritor to NHTSA identifying the problem. It identifies a total of 664 defective sensors but only lists 18 as being sold directly to Pierce. There were 6 sold to Spartan and 14 to E1.
But, and here's the biggie, 592 went to Douglas Autotech. Douglas manufactures the steering column assemblies that many fire truck builders (and manufacturers of other vehicles) use, including Pierce and Spartan. So many others beside Pierce owners may be receiving recall notices from someone.
Meritor's letter to NHTSA indicates that the defective units were shipped by them to their customers between July, 2007 and November 3, 2008.
Thanks, Firemech, for bringing this up.
Stay safe out there, everyone goes home!
