Default 1582 Physicals and Volunteer Companies - help requested

    Hi all,

I'm in process of researching data for my officer iv paper. I'm specifically trying to look at the pass/fail rates for volunteers who take the NFPA 1582 physical. I'm trying to assess the impact on volunteer systems who introduce this standard.

Does your department offer 1582 for vollies? if so - do you know who I can contact in order to obtain some data?

Please note, I'm not looking to start a career vs vollie discussion on standards, training or anything else. Just looking to get some real data so we can predict with some accuracy the impact of instituting 1582 physicals for volunteers in my area.

    thanks for your help!

Can you define pass/fail? We have 4 classes of FF in my VFD. I believe that this is how they are defined.

    A - 2 bottles

    B - 1 bottle

    C - outside support

    D - station support

After 20 years of service we become Life Members which gives us all the benefits as before but we no longer have to make a defined number of points to stay on the rolls. I still keep OSHA qualified after 40 yrs.

Dont have the stats. But we do have 1582 in our PPP. The type of firefighters we get now are in much better shape and hold a higher level of longivity on the fire ground.

If I find any more info ill get back at you.

    Default Clarification

    How about this:

if your department does NFPA 1582 physicals for volunteers... Any chance I could get the contact information of someone in the appropriate chain to see if I could get some (sanitized) reports?

    thanks!

We require this physical for all interior firefighters every 2 years; from our standpoint it has disqualified 3 firefighters at my station from interior service, luckily all have assumed other roles in the department. Oh yeah that was 3 out of 25, I can only speak for my station I am not sure how it has affected the other 4 stations. We also require a physical for the driver / operators of fire apparatus.
    Totally Unacceptable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I think 1582 states <30 every 3 years, 30-40 every 2 years, and >40 every year.
