Another "Dont Do This At Home" Story
Three-year-old unscathed after river journey
Canwest News Service July 14, 2009 1:02 AM
It was quite the birthday for three-year-old Demetrius Jones. He went trucking down the Peace River.
The Fort St. John boy fell into the river at Peace Island Park in Taylor, about 20 kilometres south of Fort St. John, around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, said Gordon Rundle, who works in the park.
"He was on just a little battery-powered truck, like a Power Wheels piece of equipment," said Rundle. "I have a suspicion he probably drove in. The river is fairly high right now."
Rundle said once Demetrius was noticed missing, about 50 or 60 people started looking for him.
A couple hours later, Demetrius was discovered about 12 kilometres down the river from where he went in. Rundle said the river was running fairly fast.
"His truck had turned over, and he had kind of swam back to it and used it as a boat," said Rundle. "When they rescued him, they took him off [the truck]. He was ready to jump back in to go get his truck, so they had to rescue his truck, too."
