Our department is looking to modify our requirements and SOGs for apparatus drivers.

We currently require our drivers to have completed EVOC training (our state does not require CDL's to operate fire apparatus), and to obtain the "blessing" of the Chief Engineer by showing competence in driving and operating the apparatus. What are some of your requirements for your drivers? A certain amount of time and/or mileage in training? Demonstration of pumping/operating/placing the apparatus on the fireground?

Additionally, some departments I have spoken with set a minimum amount of driving that must be completed each year, or the driver has to re-qualify to drive the apparatus. Is this something you do? How do you track it? Is simply keeping a logbook, to be audited monthly, in the apparatus sufficient?

Any insight, or suggestions would be appreciated.
