Becoming A Military FF
So I am thinking about joining the military, Air Force specifically, and becoming a firefighter.
I've done ALOT of research and know that I need to get the recruiter to garuntee me the job in writing and all that. But I've been coming across alot of stories of Airmen going to Iraq to work security or help protect the convoys if and when they get deployed.
So basically my question to you Air Force Firefighters out there is... Does an Airmen that is trained and works as a Air Force Firefighter ,when deployed to Iraq, work as a firefighter over there on the base? Or is he/she also helping out with the security or convoys?
Thanks in advance for any replies!
I've been to Iraq once and my buddy has been there at least 4 times... Neither Him or I have ever done convoy duty, but it all depends on what your chief wants to do.. The department I was reporting to was working 24 on 24 off and the chief in charge of the rotation prior to me required his guys to work at the dining facility checking ID's or escorting contractor TCN's around base armed and in full IBA and Battle Rattle during their off time.. For the most part that was eliminated when my chief took the reins.
damien is right for the most part. if your chief over there volunteers you for crap like that then you are out of luck. sometimes you might be deployed specifically as a TCN escort and that is all you do. or you might be deployed specifically with the army to do convoy duty, it depends on what you orders say. for the most part though on a normal AEF rotation, you'll be doing firefighter stuff while deployed.
Ok... so I would be at the Chief's mercy pretty much.
Any advice for me in trying to get a garuntee to go in the Air Force as a Firefighter?
just stand your ground and tell them youll wait until you get a ff spot
Do a search in this forum and you'll find tons of guidance regarding getting a guaranteed spot as an AF firefighter...

I hope this helps.
The Army Reg 420-1 states that 21M deployed for Fire and Emergency Services can not be detailed out for anything but FE&S.
we should get a sticky for the top of the forum on "meeting with the recruiter"
...and why did we get moved all the way down on the main forum?
