John McNamara, Ladder 123, Dies After Battle With Cancer
John McNamara didn't have to tell anyone he was a firefighter. He looked the part and certainly shed as much blood as anyone in his ten years with the FDNY. A member of Ladder 123 in Crown Heights, John worked on the pile at the site of the terrorist attacks in New York on 11 September, 2001.
Like his brothers and sisters he was exposed to toxins and things that have yet to be mentioned. Still, John carried on in the proudest traditions of the fire service. He developed cancer but fought it as any good firefighter would. He had a wife, his beloved children and the job.
John has answered his last alarm and we are all weaker for it. He died yesterday after a long battle with cancer. The effects of what John and the rest of the FDNY went through down in lower Manhattan is being told in the numbers of ailments and deaths.
John's family and his FDNY family should know that out in other parts of the country, in distant places, their sacrifice is not in vain. We must fight, using the same spirit John did, to protect those who responded that September morning and every morning after.
