I'm a fire commission in my small local district. We are trying to obtain grant money for a tanker. We submitted for a grant of $290,000 for a 2,500 - 3,000 gallon tanker. We have alot of area within and surrounding our community that has no fire protection. What I'm looking for is opinions and any references to what type of tanker is best to buy. At the presnt time we are leaning towards a vaccum tanker. Does anyone have references to this type of tanker. Does anyone have any pictures they could send me ? Does anyone have any good websites to look at?
Any information you can give or pass along would be greatly appreciated! carlbryant28@gmail.com

Hello there,
I am somewhat biased to E-ONE, because I sell them, but, E-ONE has recently,(with in the last 4-5 months) purchased the company that made Water Master vaccum tankers. They are doing them now. They are pretty impressive. E-ONE had one up at FDIC this year and it was pretty awesome. You can get it on an International or Freightliner, 2000-4000 tank sizes, 500, 750, and 1000 GPM PTO pumps.
To look at the truck and some of its specs, go to : http://www.e-one.com/products.htm?li...ypeID=19&id=86
Be safe and God Bless.
EWStay low brother!

Please define a "tanker" for me, within your department.
The reason I ask this is that in my experience, there are widely differing views on what a tanker should look like and what it should do.
In some places a tanker's sole purpose is to carry water and they often have no pumps. In some places they have a small transfer pump and do not pump firefighting lines, and in others that have a small firefighting pump with the ability to flow 1 or 2 handlines and are used to fight minor incidents (trash, brush fires and the like). Down here, we have all of the above plus those with class A 1000 gpm plus pumps and all the tools required for full fireground operations, and are used as first-in attack units.
Please give us an idea of how a tanker functions within your department.

Do you get mutual aid tenders? What are their travel distances like?
You might want to try to get two tenders instead of one if you dont have others coming.
.I am now a past chief and the views, opinions, and comments are mine and mine alone. I do not speak for any department or in any official capacity. Although, they would be smart to listen to me.
"The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on the list."
"When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water."

For $290,000 you could almost buy 2 brand new tankers:

Be smart about your purchase. When I joined my new department, they had just purchased a new pumper/tanker. It is nice, but WAY TOO BIG. It literally can travel on only two roads in our district for fear of utility lines.
In fact, we have to weigh the truck down with water to fit it in the station. Then there is only literally on inch to spare.
We look the fool for making payments on a truck that is rarely useful.

What about a straight tanker with a trailer pump for filling tankers at the water source?
