    Esquimalt apartment building catches fire

    August 20, 2009 11:02 AM

Firefighters responded to a fire at an Esquimalt apartment building Wednesday night.

Just before 11 p.m., a fire was reported in the building’s stairwell. Esquimalt firefighters arrived to find the residents had fled the building in response to the fire alarm sounding. Due to the size of the building, Victoria firefighters were called in to assist. The fire was located on the fourth-floor landing and was quickly extinguished.

Esquimalt’s assistant fire chief George McGregor said in a press release that the origins of the fire, which did not do much damage, are suspicious and Victoria police are conducting an investigation.

Wasn't my building, you KNOW I would have been on here yakkin' about it LOL. This is the first I've heard about it. The neighbourhood gossip the past few days has been about the stabbing at Timmy's Tuesday night (4am).

Not the same building, but a few miles away:

Fire guts apartment at downtown View Towers; no injuries reported

By Sandra McCulloch, Victoria Times Colonist August 27, 2009

Fire gutted a second-floor apartment in View Towers at 1147 Quadra St. in downtown Victoria Thursday afternoon.

The blaze was reported at 5:10 p.m. and witnesses saw smoke billowing from blown-out windows.

Fire battalion chief Bruce Rees said firefighters attacked the blaze from inside the building and from the outside, using ladder trucks.

“We had the fire out very quickly,” he said.

Searchers checked the building for injured people but found none.

He doesn’t believe anyone was in the suite when the fire broke out. The cause is under investigation.

The building is concrete so it was relatively easy for the fire to be contained, said Rees.

“It makes it a lot easier for us, for sure,” said Rees of the construction.

There are no sprinklers in the building. Alarm bells did work but not everyone left the building. Some remained on their balconies as the fire burned.

The failure to evacuate “is a concern,” said Rees.

“I know if it was me hearing alarm bells, I’d be heading out. If people don’t, they’re taking their chances.

“In this case, they were safe in their suites because the fire was contained to the one suite.”

Bruce McIntosh, a nine-year resident of the building, was in his 15th-floor apartment when he smelled smoke.

“Then the alarms went off and I could see out my window a huge amount of smoke,” said McIntosh.

“The last fire we had had a lot of flames — it looked like a rocket engine shooting out. This one was mostly smoke.”

There are about 500 people living in View Towers with a large number over 55, some with disabilities.

“There are a lot of older people living here,” said McIntosh.

The occupants of the damaged suite will be housed in a hotel for a few days, until they can find other accommodation.

Did you see the sad story of the child in Ontario that ran back into the building and died?
