4 or 6 years, depending on your committment level. they have some type of new 2 year program but i dont know too much about it. i think your ad for 2 years then traditional reserve for x amount of years after that, but youcan't re-enlist into active until after your complete commitment. i dunno, someone else will probably know more about that than me.

Every Service has an 8 year obligation, how you do those 8 years is up to each service. Air Force you might sign up for 4 or 6 years Active Duty. If you signed up for 4 years Active Duty you still belong to Uncle Sam for 4 more years of Reserve Time, Active or in-Active and are subject to call up.

XFedFF is correct. The eight years in the air force breaks down with these options:
1. 4 year Active Duty Enlistment -- 4 years inactive ready reserve (subject to recall during that time)
2. 6 year Active Duty enlistment -- 2 year inactive ready reserve
3. 2 year Active Duty enlistment -- 6 year inactive ready reserve
This is the option where the enlistee signs up for 2 years active duty, then has to do another 2 years in the guard. We have two fo these troops at my base and they both re-enlisted after their first 2 years. And yes they keep the enlistment bonus of $5K.
