I was wondering if you have to become certified First responder before you can become certified in EMT B.

Some agencies will require your EMT before you can test. Not the same for first responder.

First responder is around 60 hour to test , cost 150 -300
EMT B is 160 hours to test. cost 400-700
EMT -Intermediate is 650 hours to test. 450 -800
Paramedic is approx 2300 hours to test. 6-8 thousand
You can start at FR and move up to basic, then move up to I.
Or you can go to college and take Paramedicine.
All depends on what you want to do and how much of your own money you want to invest.

Just my opinion, and you have the time and money, if you take FR first .. it will make EMT easier. You wont be stressing the emt as much because you will have already seen some of the material.

I recently took FR and just for the fun of it checked out an EMT-B study prep guide from the library and after doing some of the chapter study questions looks like I already knew about 80% of the material. Almost got all the trauma questions.

Emt
I would say go for your EMT and just get it done. It will open more doors for you and put you ahead of others at some Depts. Good Luck

I would just do my EMT training. That being said if you do First Responder please do not think you know it all. I get no bigger kick than hearing how people "THINK" they will skate through class because the already know it all. Study hard!

In PA you must have FR to get EMT. This is a new law.
