Am I too late for brunch? Then again, I have yet to see a firefighter ever turn down a good meal.

    Will this do?

Seafood Pasta Salad with Lemon-Dill Dressing and fresh baked crusty baguettes.

    Be safe out there.

Actually, I was thinking nekkid, tired to a tree, and leave them there for the wildlife to have there way with them.

Even better idea, just shoot the bisturds!

We could nail them nekkid to a board using a nail gun, cut off their eyelids and put them in the middle of Death Valley in peak summer heat. What the sun does not burn off, the vultures will eat.

Did I mention I like the way you think?

I have a couple of problem children on the roster down here that I could use some help with. They like to whine, cry and grieve about everything that they don't like. I am arranging early retirment for a couple of them, but others are special cases.

    Do you make house calls?

I will probably have about 20 to 30 slots to fill in a couple of weeks. I expect a lot of people to show up for that.

No... failing to recert & comply with training requirements. Deadline is December 15th. With a month left, some will not finish. Known since the day I arrived. 85% are done and no one died because of it. It is only hard if you make it hard. Watchdog ready is issue a big fine if not done.

Today's staff meeting was like a flashback to high school. Drama, drama, drama...

Give me 5 minutes with them. I have a lot of pent-up aggression in me. I could use a few whiney brats to take it out on. I have a very low tolerance for people who whine and moan when they have no reason to.

Where do I sign up for one of those slots? I'd work for you anytime PK.

Since they are whiners, I suspect they are also C shifters, just give them some cheese with their whine!

When I was the drillmaster, I had rookies that would whine to the instructors. They would take care of them and would allow me to know as well.

I would come out on the yard and maybe 30 or so rookies where doing this or that or watching others do an event.

I would yell WHOA! Fall In!

They would then start removing all the ground ladders from one of the tillers we had at the academy, carry them around the yard and then throw them at the burn building and tower. They would then take them down put them back on the truck and switch roles until everyone would have their hands on every ladder on the truck.

Then after a 10 minutes break they would raise the 45 pole ladder in a church raise and all would climb up one side and down the other.
This would go on most of the day until the instructors was satisfied that the rookies have this event down pat.

BTY - The whining soon stopped.

It's funny you should mention the Church Raise... (we called it the 50' Banger Cathedral Raise). You couldn't pass Academy A without climbing up one side and down the other. Teaches one to trust.

We were given 3 opportunities. Depending when you got enough nerve to seal-the-deal, you received bonus points against your final academy score. Points were reduced for each opportunity.

Since I needed all the help I could get, I went first. It was right after lunch and I threw-up when I got to the top after I looked down. It wasn't that I was afraid of heights, I just couldn't take the swaying that was going on at the top, so I got sea sick I reckon. (Note: If you have never done this before, you don't know what it is to be alive.)

Trust was built that day because I hit a few guys on the ground and the others were worried about the next round. I set a bad example for the others. Nothing worse than heaving 50 feet in the air with nothing to hang on to but your guts. In those days we really didn't have too many guys complaining. They didn't take the crap and would bounce you quickly.

Our Training Chief tells recruits on the first day... "If you ever confuse me with your momma, then your daddy has a reason to drink and your days are numbered." He is by far the most hated guy in the dept... except for me of course. I hired him.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Cheffie: Thanks for the vote of confidence. The way I conduct myself here is not what you would see at work. They use a variety of colorful names with many adjectives when referring to me. They are still getting use to me. I hope you like the midwest and deep snow.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to share this little story:

Some years back, I had accepted a Chief job at a County Dept. I was the first Chief hired from outside, so there was no honeymoon. The guys on the floor started a pool on how many days I'd last before quitting. I found out about it from one of the Captains that told me I didn't belong there and I should not unpack. He predicted 30 days. Well, I took his money and about 30 other guys when I went out and asked if I could get in on the bet. After I placed my bet, no one else wanted in because they knew what I was doing. I collected around $1500 6 months later. I invited each of the platoons out for a steak with their money. I thanked them for making me feel at home and how much I appreciated the dinners they gave me. I was there for 16 months and they actually put on a real dinner for me in my final week. I made many good friends there and it was one dept that I truly miss at times.

That Captain later became one of my Battalion Chiefs and told me every week that I should E.S.&D. He didn't really mean it... he became one of my best allies while I was there. I hired him at my next Chief tour for Operations Chief. He took over as Chief when I left that job and cusses me out on the phone once a month for screwing up his life.

    I love my job.

    Jonnee & PaladinKnight

This bring back great memories of my basic recruit class many, many years ago!
Also I was lucky, so I thought, to be assigned to the drill school when I was a Lt as the principal recruit instructor.

We did it all, Church raises, pompier ladder work, life nets, life line-belt slides, stokes basket rescues, climbing the 100 aerial, which was a 1952 Pirsch Aluminum aerial, bridging, roof ladder work, and so many more other drills.

Later on when I thought I would live somewhat easy, I was made captain and was chief instructor for about 8 years.

All the new recruits which came in was given the same chance as we always gave the others. We still taught the same material but had stopped the life net drill as those had been removed from the trucks.

I always love to see a new member try to insert a sprinkler stop into a discharging head!!

Something like a monkey and a football thing!
