I can remember lighting off these little black cylinders when I was a kid and phew did they ever stink. But they were supposed to be 'harmless' except for the obvious fire hazard.

Mercury(II) thiocyanate (Hg(SCN)2) is an inorganic chemical compound, the salt of Hg2+ and the thiocyanate anion. It is a stable solid at room temperature that has the appearance of white powder with chunks; it can also be grey in color, depending on purity. Mercury compounds are extremely toxic and protective equipment should be used whenever working with mercury thiocyanate. However, it is commercially available, though expensive.[2] Mercury thiocyanate is best known for its former use in pyrotechnics, as it will produce a large, winding “snake” when set on fire. This is known as the Pharaoh’s Serpent.[3] Though some people still use it for this purpose, it is generally avoided because of the production of toxic gases when this reaction occurs.

It's amazing that "WE" have lived as long as we have without the government to save us. Well maybe not!

We got our butts busted when we needed it {sometimes when we didn't!}, ran with sticks in our hands, played in mud and didn't worry about what germs might be on that thing we just picked up off the ground. It's sad that kids today can't even play in their own back yard without worrying about being kidnapped or, worse, touching something that might mean they have to immediately go wash their hands with antibacterial soap.

Ya know its kinda funny that tradition about getting a lump of coal in your stocking if you were "bad". To me that would be a GOOD THING. You can do so much with a lump of coal. It can make heat (for a few hours anyhow) or if you have the means and the time, a rough cut diamond. You choose.

In any case, a lump of coal can be a better gift than any store-bought item, is all I'm saying.

Knowing Rick, I'll bet you dollars to donuts that he puts a small lump of coal in a ring box.

Even though I am not a citizen of the United States of America, I am seeking permission from The Esteemed Peanut Gallery" to request:

"What is Plead Upon The Fifth Amendment, please Alex?"

"I can not tell a lie", therefore I refuse to answer the question.
