If you are in Portage Wisconsin there is a fire department "Rummage Sale" held in Mundelein, Illinois on October 31 at the high school starting at 8 am.

They usually have old or used leather helmets for sale there.

One piece of advice is get there early because the "Vultures" show up early and buy up the good stuff!!

Thank you for contributing very useful information to the topic.

Anyways ebay is about the best I have found unless you can find someone selling one for a good deal.

That is your opinion. You will see that many, many people have one that is the oppisite of yours.

While i agree they are heavy, how do you figure they are oversized? I have seen plenty of plastic helmets that are virtually the same size.

As for being overpriced, realize what you are getting for the price. Comparing a plastic helmet that is 100% machine made in a mold with the raw material being plastic pellets to a leather helmet that is hand made is hardly a fair comparison.

You get what you pay for. Look at the labor and raw materials for each. Based on that alone, i could more easily say that plastic helmets are overpriced! What do you think the plastic costs to mold one helmet vs the leather for one helmet?

The only hand labor on a plastic helmet is mounting the liner to the shell and attaching the shield holder. The shell itself is one piece of molded plastic. Even the color is molded right in. The molds are automated. Once the shell is molded it can be assembled and it's done.

On a leather helmet, a human has to do the setup for the leather cutting, then assemble and stich all the pieces, trim them, dp the helmet and let it cure for weeks, then install the impact cap, plus painting, mounting the cap then installing the liner.

A leather helmet has character and each one is unique. Each one was hand made by a human. Not an automated mold.

So yeah, the plastic helmets are overpriced. My opinion.

Not to hijack, but I just missed the perfect lid on Ebay because of my junk internet connection, so I'm looking for an N5A from the 60s-80s, fixed fit 7 1/4, no front or holder needed. Preferably complete with suspension, etc inside. Also, no requirement for specific color, I'll just repaint it.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. Its for a parade helmet/non-incident related events, so no concerns with NFPA. Thats what my Sam Houston is for. Any help would be appreciated.
